The main objectives of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO in 2003, are to safeguard intangible cultural heritage, to ensure respect for it, to raise awareness about its importance and to provide for international cooperation in these fields.
The Director-General further underscored that tangible and intangible heritage are sources of social cohesion, factors of enrichment through diversity and drivers of creativity, innovation and urban regeneration.
R.2: Inscription of the Festival of Saint Francis of Assisi on the Representative List could increase the visibility of the intangible cultural heritage in general and promote respect for cultural diversity and human creativity.
